Freedom for Rogelio Tavio López

"Rogelio Tavio López: 29 days under hunger strike"
Today , March 31 2012 Rogelio Tavio López, 48 years old, leader of "Movement Resistance and Democracy” in Guantanamo, Cuba, is under a hunger strike for 29 days. Rogelio Tavio López has been on hunger strike since he was detained, to protest what he views as his unjust prosecution and the fabricated charges against him. He is demanding his freedom and insisting on his inocence.
He was arrested on March 2, after the police surrounded his home for hours, without allowing anyone to approach. That day, "a troop of police assault” in Guantanamo, violently broke into his home and made an unauthorized search, before the violent arrest.
On Mach 21, the authorities of the Operations Unit of the city of Guantanamo Police, where he is being held, does not allow his family to see him, leading only to worry, and speculation over his fragile health.
Rogelio Tavio Ramírez, his son, told Human Rights Watch that his father, Rogelio Tavio López, was charged with public disorder and “actions against the norm in the development of a minor” (acciones contra el normal desarrollo del menor) – a crime in Cuba’s Criminal Code that punishes parents and guardians for failing in “their responsibilities related to the respect and love of the homeland” – charges his son said were motivated by his political activities.
Rogelio Tavio Lopez suffers from diabetes and hypertension and his health has deteriorated due to the hunger strike and the lack of medical attention.
We express our deep concern for the life of the leader of the opposition to the Castro regime, taking into account the deaths of prisoners of conscience Orlando Zapata Tamayo and Wilman Villar Mendoza ( Along with countless others ).
We demand to the Cuban government for the immediate release of Rogelio Tavio López.
We demand to the Cuban government to stop the imprisonment of members of the opposition.
We demand to the Cuban government to stop the deaths of prisoners of conscience while they are in prison
For more information about this case, please, feel free to contac Yohandris Beltran Gamboa, Member of the"Movement Resistence and democracy" at Guantanamo City, Cuba.
